          We want to congratulate the Government and inventor of Iraq on
          joining the Patent Cooperation Treaty, PCT. After many events,
          webinars, and seminars regarding the significance of member-
          ship in the Patent Cooperation Treaty, the Iraqi Government felt
          the need to become a PCT member to achieve a better result
          for their inventors and innovators. After many contemplations and
          deliberations,  Iraq  finally  joined  the  Patent  Cooperation  Treaty,
          PCT, on January 31st.
          In order to demonstrate the importance of the Patent Coopera-
          tion Treaty to the invention and innovation ecosystem of Iraq, the                     TREATY, PCT AS THE 155TH MEMBER OF
          International Federation of Inventors’ Associations has held many              IRAQ JOINS THE PATENT COOPERATION
          events and workshops for the community. For instance, Mr. Bijan
          Nasiri Azam, IFIA’s Representative in WIPO and the IP Office Man-
          ager of IFIA, had the chance to explain the intellectual property
          and PCT by holding a workshop regarding IP in Baghdad, Iraq.
          Moreover, he had the opportunity to indicate intellectual property
          and the Patent Cooperation Treaty to the Deputy Minister of High-
          er Education and Scientific Research of Iraq in the same event.
          After all, on January 31st, 2022, the Government of Iraq officially
          joined the Patent Cooperation Treaty, PCT, making Iraq the 155th
          member of the PCT Union. The PCT will enter into force for Iraq
          on April 30th, 2022.
          By this treaty, IFIA hopes it encourages and assists the Iraqi re-
          searchers, inventors, and innovators to participate in international
          scientific conferences within their competence and present their
          research abstracts and discussions within the patrols of the soci-
          ety. Moreover, we hope that the Iraqi Government would develop                                 THE PCT UNION
          more cooperations with international organizations specialized in
          this aspect and to support the innovators to elaborate their ideas
          to inventions and provide them with the requirements to resolve
          the obstacles of their progress.
          Lastly, IFIA thanks Mr. Bijan Nasiri Azam, IFIA’s Representative in
          WIPO and IP Office Manager, and Mrs. Traiza Jasim Ridha, the
          President of the Iraqi Society of Inventors and Innovators, IIIS, for
          all their hard work and efforts. We hope for a bright future for the
          Iraqi invention and innovation society.                                                            51
